Reality Check
by Phyllis Ellis

Ruff.
Awaken.
Ruff, Ruff!
Awaken again.
What day is it?
Tuesday?
Ruff.
O.K.
I'm awake.

Routine of
animals,
human, birds,
food, now!

Hot tea,
hot chocolate
with cookies
Set on the dresser.

The TV news
is on now.
War in Kosovo.
Refugees fleeing
their homes.
Bombs.

A man in California
arrested for having
his dog ride with him
on his motorcycle.
15 days in jail.
$1000 fine.
All of it
cruel and ridiculous.

Breakfast.
Time to think
of today's activities.
Work, lots of work.
Many errands to run.
And of course
don't forget the
laundry.
Ruff
Ruff, ruff.
The dogs are excited.
A sunny cool day.
Let's go, let's go!
Ruff! Ruff!

Meow!
O.K.
It's time for the
ritual walk in the
woods.

Three dogs, a cat,
and a human
walking together.
Trees budding.
Flowers blooming.
Sun has risen.
"Morning Has Broken" as birds sing.
Spring is here.

Trees and sunshine
playing games
with light and shadow.
Mountains light blue and lavendar
with the morning light.

Time to sit on the wooden
bench by the stream.
To watch the water
flow over the rocks.
Cat meowing, dogs barking.
Time to go! Time to go!

Back home.
More hot tea to go
down to the basement.
No windows.
Just the quiet of the room.

Beep, beep as the computer
comes on.
The screen comes up.
Time to start work now.
I'm ready.
